| 08/01/05 2:10a | Two good pieces of news but I will keep the update short. I was able to test the multi-language functionality and it works :) Worked on the first try so taht was good news. Long is the road and hard is the way and all that. Eventually I'll be looking for translators. I already have Japanese, French and Russian taken care of and maybe a few more but I'll wait and see. And any recruitment of outside translators would have to wait several months - probably October or November. By that time I should have everything more or less in place and stable enough. The second bit of news is that video support is now added in again. And that's all I'll say about that at the moment. Everything's looking great and running well. I'm pleased with how it's going. And that's it ^_^ | |||||
| 07/16/05 12:50p | Got multi-language and unicode support added in. I decided to tackle it now and I'm glad I did. I figured if I do it now, I'll have a good base to work from and it won't be so difficult to add to that. If I did it last, it'd be a nightmare converting everything over. I have a friend working on the Japanese translation so that'll be a test to see how it's working. Otherwise, I just tried pasting Japanese text into the edit box and then adding the line and the Japanese text was displayed quite nicely in the dialogue list :D Good stuff. | |||||
| 05/07/05 11:51a | The audio component is fully merged (been like that for a little while, just didn't update here) and working with the program. I'll debug it as I work with the rest of the program. It has a couple of neat little features that the old XombieSub did not have. You'll see when it's ready :) Also, it took a day but the program can now read in plain text scripts and XombieSub scripts. It can also write XombieSub scripts. I handle loading scripts differently than the beta. Should be much easier. And faster now, of course. I'll add in SSA script reading/writing and then go to work on adding the video. That shouldn't take too long. One last thing to mention - unicode support may not be as far away as I thought. Perhaps even available at launch. I'll know within about two weeks how that will play out. Windows 9x users will need to install an additional component from Microsoft in order to get the program to work correctly as Non-Asian versions of Windows 9x do not play well with unicode. I'll make that part of the installation step when I get there. Other versions of Windows should be fine. Anyway, I'm not 100% sure I'll go with unicode before launch. To be seen. | |||||
| 04/20/05 5:15p | Okay, so I made really good progress with the audio component. I'll merge it into the main XombieSub project this evening and then continue on with the main program. I can't find any more glaring holes with the audio component so I'll test it as I test XombieSub. It'll be easier to spot bugs with the audio when I actually start timing with it. Once I get that merged in, I'll start working on the script reading, as below. Incidentally, it took 10 minutes to add in true SSA timing support. Left click really only sets the start time and right click really only sets the end time. You can drag the mouse all you want when SSA timing is enabled but it won't affect anything. It only cares when you left or right click. Much better than the weeks it took me to hack out a poor workaround in the old XombieSub code. | |||||
| 04/17/05 12:53a | Okay, lots of the last news posts were lies. Unicode will not be included in the initial release because I'm no longer developing in Visual Basic. The language I'm using is faster and will compile standalone executables that do not require the usage of external dlls or other crap. Of course, if I need to have external files. That's not to say there won't be any external dlls. I just won't need them for the core program. If I have to access any 3rd party code, I may require them. For example - when the program interacts with avisynth you'll need that handy. As it stands now the alpha version is a single small exectuable. No installer or anything else is needed (currently). Right now I'm working on the audio part of the program. I won't be using any 3rd party controls or whatever. Just native wav file reading. This means a step back in what will initially be supported. At release only uncompressed wav files will be supported. 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit mono/stereo basically. After release and things settle down I'll look into adding mp3, ogg and whatever else strikes my fancy. I'm probably about a week or two away from finishing up the audio stuff. At least the first incarnation. It takes about 8 seconds to load and display a 256 mb 16 bit stereo timing wav for me. And this is the unoptimized version. Once I'm done with the first iteration of the audio code I'll add it in to the main XombieSub program and continue working on that. The nice thing about making my own audio reading/display code is that I can force any behavior I want. So I don't have to mess with workarounds to get other people's code to work. If you want left/right click start/end time timing, no problem. You like selecting audio? No problem. Etc... XombieSub itself is coming along nicely. After I merge in the audio code I'll add in script reading. That actually won't take very long since the structure for storing the script is already there. I'll start with .ssa, .ass and .xss script reading but other formats will be added after release. I may release before adding in karaoke and effects editor code. Still not sure on that. Anyway, sorry for the lack of updates. Not sure when it'll be done (I've learned my lesson in guessing timeframes) but rest assured that I'm working on it daily and things are moving along nicely. |

| No Date, No Time | I'm wiping out old posts since they aren't relevant. My old email address is still okay - xombie@TseijinD0Tnet just remove the "@T" and "D0T" and replace them with their better known and more readable cousins. Download links for the old beta follow...
XombieSub Beta Install Base Please note that these are older files and I seem to be missing the update to 0.9.2 which should be okay as long as the other updates are installed on top. If you have a problem with them, I'll try to help but I'm pretty busy working towards version 1.00. And be sure to install each update. Don't just install the base and then the update to 0.9.44. |
